The Uni-Clic system is the most well known system for floating laminate or engineered floors and is widely regarded as the best.

There are other click systems available for engineered wood flooring but the majority still use the “T & G method” – this is when you glue the tongue and groove together.

An underlayment is required with a floating installation to prevent contact between the floor and the sub-floor and more importantly to serve as a moisture barrier and insulation.

The traditional use of carpet on stairs seems to be seen as out-dated by many, with engineered wood flooring becoming the choice for home owners.

One of the main benefits of wood stairs, aside from the aesthetic value, is that it is easy to maintain and clean, meaning you’ll have stairs that are going to have a quality look for years to come.

An engineered wood floor adds character and a warmth to a room and there certainly are a number of wooden floors to choose from; bamboo floors, hardwood floors and oak flooring to name but a few. However, finishing the flooring is one of the most important steps in trying to achieve this.

Finishing or refinishing floors is hard work, but in the end, it will be completely worth it as you’ll have a beautiful engineered wood floor

Start by sanding the floor with course grit sandpaper such as 36-grit. If you’re using a drum sander, make sure that the sander is always moving to avoid burns or grooves in the floor that cannot be repaired. Be careful – it only takes a matter of seconds to damage your floor.

Make sure your floor is completely clear – no dirt or sawdust should be seen. Then the staining the floors should be done with a rag to keep the stain even on the floor.

There is nothing worse than laying a new floor and realising that you’ve not got enough to fill your room!

The additional square metreage ordered is commonly referred to as a “waste factor”. During installation, boards are cut to specifically fit your floor. However, once the board is cut (particularly if it is cut at an angle) you may not be able to use the rest of the board.

This is why it is important to always consider wastage!

Your new flooring is organic and can have reactions to other natural factors, after all, it was once a living object.

The factors in your home that could affect your flooring are temperature, moisture, and humidity.

Acclimatisation is a process that allows wood to adjust to its new environment. You should leave the floors inside the room they are to be installed in for a period of time, this allows the natural moisture content to adjust to the new conditions.

The wood will acclimatise to the indoor humidity and temperature in around 10-14 days. Most professionals actually recommend that you bring the hardwood floors into your home for a minimum of two weeks for best results.

Moisture conditions play an important part in flooring installation than most would think.

A close watch on your flooring’s moisture conditions should be done before, during and after installation to ensure there will be no long term condensation problems which will gradually worsen.

To perform your own moisture test, all you need is polyfilm and duct tape and you can conduct a moisture test on your engineered wood flooring very easily.

Now cut several small pieces of polyfilm and place it on several locations within your floor service area.

Next, seal the edges with the duct tape and let it sit for around 24-48 hours.

If condensation occurs, then you will have to address the moisture problems.

Even with the utmost care, your floors are still going to get dirty from time to time – but how should you clean them?

Using a lightweight vacuum cleaner and brush when it is deemed necessary to do so is recommended.

Mopping with a damp mop is another step that should be followed. Be sure to use a damp mop, not a mop that is soaking wet as water will damage the floor. Many people suggest adding vinegar to the water to help cut grease and grime.

Stubborn stains will require a professional cleaner such as oil soap. There are many brands available, so it is worth testing the product on an inconspicuous area of your engineered wood flooring in order to make sure it does not stain the wood or leave a residue behind.

Using these tips will keep your engineered wood flooring clean and in top condition.

One of the most difficult aspects of getting the wood flooring is working out how much you will need – especially when it is something you haven’t done before.

Should your room be a perfect rectangle or square, then it is easier as all you have to do is measure the length and width of the room before multiplying the two.

However, many rooms have slight differences and irregularities, such as alcoves. to accommodate this, you need to mentally split the room in to squares and rectangles an measure the length and width of each one before multiplying them.

Then you should add the totals from the individual shapes together to determine the overall size of your room in squared feet or metres. Once you have this figure you should add 10% to it for cutting waste.
